About the Concert

From stillness to dance — the title traces the exact arc of this program. The Worthington Chamber Orchestra opens its Resonant Masterworks season, and its year-long celebration of the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death, with Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Capriccio espagnol and Manuel de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain, featuring guest pianist Orlay Alonso in one of the Spanish repertoire’s most richly atmospheric works. The concert culminates in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major — the work Wagner famously called “the apotheosis of the dance,” and a fitting opening statement for a season built around his enduring legacy.

Nights in the Gardens of Spain by Manuel de Falla

En el Generalife (At the Generalife): Evokes the Moorish gardens of the Generalife near the Alhambra in Granada, blending quivering piano lines with distant horn calls.

Danza lejana (Distant Dance): Moves to an unspecified or imaginary garden, starting with faint dance fragments that build into agitated, passionate passages.

En los jardines de la Sierra de Córdoba (In the Gardens of the Sierra de Córdoba): Features vibrant, rhythmic gypsy and flamenco-inspired guitar-like strumming in the strings and piano.

This collaboration between The Worthington Chamber Orchestra, conductor Antoine T. Clark, and pianist Orlay Alonso, promises an afternoon of depth, brilliance, and musical camaraderie not to be missed.
